About S.O.S. Triathlon · 2027
The Survival of the Shawangunks (SOS) was created by Don Davis, a veteran Triathlete and founder of the New York Triathlete Association. The first official running of the SOS was in 1983.
The SOS course was previously run by Don and friends as a training course to prepare for Ironman.
The SOS is an eight stage triathlon held in New Paltz, NY every September. Consistently ranked among the best adventure triathlons in the world, and among the most scenic, the SOS has become so popular the event sells out in minutes.
Fewer than 200 athletes get to compete each year on the scenic highways circling the northern ridge of the Shawangunk Mountain Range and through Minnewaska State Park for a combination run/swim journey through some of America's most beautiful cross-country trails and spring fed lakes.

The SOS Triathlon is a one-of-a-kind adventure, created for triathletes who are ready to take on a truly unique challenge. The course features a 30-mile bike, three open-water swims, and four trail runs—nearly 20 miles of running and 2 miles of swimming—through some of the most beautiful terrain in the region.
To ensure athlete safety and preserve the integrity of the race, all entrants are asked to complete either:
A Half distance (70.3) within 7 hours, or
A Full distance (140.6) within 15 hours,
within 18 months of race day.If you’re not interested in pursuing an official qualification, we still encourage you to connect with us. There are flexible options available, and we’d love to help find what works best for you. Please email evan@sostriathlon.com
Athletes may use SOS 2026 as a qualifier—please include your finishing time when registering. You’ll have until August 15, 2027 to provide qualifying details. If you don't have a qualifying event, but are confident in your ability to take on the SOS, please reach out.
If you have any trouble updating your registration with your qualifying race, just email us at evan@sostriathlon.com and we’ll be happy to assist.
There are strict cutoff times throughout the course, but if you meet the qualification standards, you should be well within reach. You can review our cutoff policy here: https://www.sostriathlon.com/copy-of-race-day-info
Please note that we have a no deferral, no rollover, no refund policy. However, we strongly encourage athletes to consider race insurance, which many past participants have found to be a great safety net in the event of injury.
If you meet the requirements and are ready for an unforgettable experience, we’d love to welcome you to the SOS family. Join us for the 41st anniversary of this legendary race and be part of an incredible community of athletes!
