About The Rift 2027

The Rift offers routes from 60 km to 330 km, giving every rider a way to experience the wild, volcanic highlands of Iceland. Whether you’re here for a fast taste of black sand gravel or a full ultra-endurance odyssey through the country’s raw interior, each course delivers its own mix of climbing, river crossings, lava fields, and vast open views.

From the compact Crack (60 km), to the rugged Crevasse (140 km), the iconic Rift (200 km), and the unsupported ultra Abyss (330 km), every distance is built to showcase Iceland at its most powerful and otherworldly. Choose your challenge and meet the highlands on their terms.

RACE RULES
The race director has the final authority on any disputes. Volunteers are not staff. They may not have information about the course or your time beyond their job to hand you food and water. Do not rely on their information. Plan ahead of time. 

RACE AGE 
With the exception of the youth restrictions, your race age is the age you will be turning in the present year. ie. if you are 44 on race day, but will turn 45 in August, you will race in the 45+ category. Minimum age to race is 18 unless being accompanied by an adult. You must be the minimum age on race day. 

START 
We use a rolling start. Riders have to be at least 10 meters behind the lead-out car from the start. The roads are open to car traffic and therefore riders must follow general traffic laws at all times and stay on the right lane.

CHECK POINTS AND CUT OFF TIMES
Cut-off times will be established for reaching and for departing each checkpoint. Any participant not reaching a checkpoint before the established arrival cut-off time will be pulled from the event. Arrival cut-off times are based on an average speed of 9 mph and are established for the purpose of rider safety. Therefore, these times will be strictly enforced. 

SUPPORT ON COURSE 
Outside support is not allowed on course.

Participants may help other participants with mechanical support, navigational assistance, or by any other means. 

GENERAL RULES AND ETIQUETTE*

1. Be responsible for your belongings and don’t throw trash on the trail. 

2. Be nice to your fellow racers, always announce when you are passing and make sure they have a safe place to pull over, especially in the technical parts. 

3. No short-cutting the course 

4. Remember Iceland is a fragile place, respect the landscape and stay on the route. No off-road riding!

5. If you need to stop and take a break make sure you are well off course in a hardened area. 

6. Throwing trash on course will result in an immediate disqualification.

7. Aero bars are not allowed on course, except for in The Abyss.

8. Drafting is not allowed between gender categories overall in 200km.

9. E-bikes are not allowed.

10. The roads are open to car traffic and therefore riders must follow general traffic laws. Make sure to let service cars and ambulances through if they need.

11. You must wear or carry with you all the clothes that you plan to use during the race. Dropping off clothes at feed stations is not allowed. This is to ensure your safety as the weather can turn vicious in minutes and help can be far away.

12. Protesting period is until 5.30pm after the race and before the podium ceremony.

CHALLENGES AND RESULTS
Timing is provided in real time and participants can check via mobile app to confirm their finish. No recorded finishes should be reported immediately. 

The Race Director has the final determination on protest. STRAVA is not considered official timing and will only be used to confirm completion of the course, not official time.

At The Rift, tickets are eligible for a refund within 24 hours of purchase. After this period, all sales are final, and no refunds will be issued. Deferring an entry to the next year is allowed until March 1, 2027. After that we do not allow that change on registration.
