About Unrouted
A checkpoint-style ride to the hidden gems of Chittenden County
Here’s the situation, it’s November 1st, the leaves have fallen, the days are getting shorter, but you’re looking for one last adventure ride. Well, your friends at Jericho Dirt have a new type of adventure ride for you, inspired by the LA Tourist events in Southern California.
Here’s the deal, there will be a start and finish location, but no set route. A few days before the event all participants will be sent GPS coordinates and clues for checkpoints at some of our favorite places, where books are hidden. At each checkpoint you will need to find the book, rip out the page corresponding to your number plate. Once you have collected all of the pages, you return to the finish destination and turn them in for a finish time. You’re free to take any route you like and connect the checkpoints in any order. Want to add in a scenic detour or favorite shortcut, go for it. The only rules are: you must complete the course under your own power on one bike (no uber, no bus rides, no bike swaps), follow all laws, and respect private property, trail, or road closures.
Bike choice and route choice are half the challenge. While most races will tell you exactly where to go and what bike you must ride, this format leaves the choice up to you. There will checkpoints that favor a road bike, while others may favor a gravel bike, and maybe one or two where you want a MTB. The route you choose can make one type of bike preferable over another. Some might choose to ride a road bike and hike any single track they encounter, others might choose the comfort and capability of a mountain bike. Generally a gravel bike is likely the most efficient, but that may differ based on your individual route and skills.
There will be a long option, expect 55-75 miles, and a short option with fewer checkpoints, 25-40 miles. You can ride with as many friends as you like or roll solo.
Once you make it to the finish, with or without all your pages, you will be greeted by a local hotdog and beer from Lucy and Howe brewery, included in your entry. Feel free to hangout and share adventure stories with your fellow riders.
Special note: Please do not park at the Jericho Ale and Bean/Lucy and Howe as they have limited parking. You can park at the Jericho Elementary School which is a short (0.4 mi) walk/ride from the brewery.
